Bida (not her real name) is 2 years + 9 months old. She has been at home with me for a couple months now and I've tried to amp up our "schooling" at home. Figuring out where to start has left our new apartment a bit jumbled with mostly-completed-games lying around the tabletops.
The inspiration for this rock clock came from The Kavanaugh Report. Nicole at The Kavanaugh Report (one of my favorite blogs) created a rainbow colored clock with rocks to designate hours & minutes. For now I'm just sticking to the hours because Bida doesn't recognize numbers well yet and I don't want to overwhelm her. Our rocks are painted in shades of red and organized by size with the darkest & largest being 12.
I cut out the sort-of-a-circle and drew minute marks on one side without numbers and the hour numbers on the other side before laminating the page. I also made laminated hour & minute arrows but she's too young to understand and they usually end up parallel to each other pointing in opposite directions. She loves to match things so she's done fairly well organizing the numbers according to the clock face... even if the 9 almost always ends up looking more like another 6.
Anyways I'd rate the clock a success. She has pulled it out a few times and certainly always loves a matching game. She just doesn't realize she's learning the basics of time yet.
