keeping it simple

Some of my favorite things to do with Bida involve pulling out a random selection of items from the kitchen and seeing what she'll do with them. Two bowls, tongs, a slotted spoon, a whisk and ice provided me a solid 25 minutes of quiet.

It also allowed me to use those old ice cubes that never make it out of the bottom of the tray.

The best part? When we were all done Bida rolled up her towel "work space" and carried it to her bedroom. She must have learned to do that when she went to school a few months ago because although I didn't teach her that, it's certainly something we'll do moving forward. I want to get her a yoga mat to use as her work space and well… to do toddler yoga!

painting leaves

Today we went on a nature hike and made sure to find some large leaves and pine cones to paint.

Bida loves painting but we save it for special occasions because it makes my skin crawl. Not because I'm not a fan of getting messy but because not all of our belongings are here, we're only in this apartment for a few months and she can not get paint on anything. We're working on making sure she's aware of her space when painting and so we haven't gotten paint on anything yet but that doesn't mean I'm not always a bit on edge when she has a brush in hand.

Anyways, go forth and craft!

Side note - Bida got to watch a snake eat a mouse at the nature center and it was mesmerizing.

try all the sports

Bida started a 12 week rotational sports class yesterday. All of the soccer groups were full on the weekend so we were left with an "olympian" class. I think this rotational set up is probably more beneficial in the long run because it will give her an opportunity to pick which sport (or sports) she likes most for the future.
I didn't hesitate to sign her up but I was a little nervous the morning of her first class because she's on the young side of the age range and a girl. Luckily we quickly noticed that the majority of her class was close to 3 years old, about half the class were little girls and they don't actually play with each other. Bida isn't always the most outgoing in new situations, neither particularly bad nor good but a simple observation, so we sort of pre-planned our reactions as to try to encourage but not force her to participate.

My best advice is to set low expectations and don't push. As much as I wanted Bida to participate and rush across the field when instructed to do so… sometimes she stood still twisting her hands together, the way she does when she's a bit overwhelmed. One of us would run back to her and hold her hand as we ran together across the field. We tried not to make a big deal and we certainly didn't give threats because if we'd of said "participate or we go home" we would have been out of there within the first 5 minutes. The whole story changed at about 20 minutes in though when she became comfortable enough to follow the teacher's lead.

It also didn't hurt that we've already played soccer with her a bit. We bought a soccer ball recently and she immediately fell in love with kicking her little size 3 ball around. Next week we'll try out t-ball, wish us luck!

like clockwork

Bida (not her real name) is 2 years + 9 months old. She has been at home with me for a couple months now and I've tried to amp up our "schooling" at home. Figuring out where to start has left our new apartment a bit jumbled with mostly-completed-games lying around the tabletops.

The inspiration for this rock clock came from The Kavanaugh Report. Nicole at The Kavanaugh Report (one of my favorite blogs) created a rainbow colored clock with rocks to designate hours & minutes. For now I'm just sticking to the hours because Bida doesn't recognize numbers well yet and I don't want to overwhelm her. Our rocks are painted in shades of red and organized by size with the darkest & largest being 12.

I cut out the sort-of-a-circle and drew minute marks on one side without numbers and the hour numbers on the other side before laminating the page. I also made laminated hour & minute arrows but she's too young to understand and they usually end up parallel to each other pointing in opposite directions. She loves to match things so she's done fairly well organizing the numbers according to the clock face... even if the 9 almost always ends up looking more like another 6.

Anyways I'd rate the clock a success. She has pulled it out a few times and certainly always loves a matching game. She just doesn't realize she's learning the basics of time yet.
